Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemy IX Soter II (116–80 BC)

AR Tetradrachm, Alexandria Mint

Weight: 13.2 grams

Reference: Svoronos 1687

This silver tetradrachm was struck during the reign of Ptolemy IX Soter II, one of the later rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Egypt. The obverse features a diademed portrait of Ptolemy I facing right, continuing the long-standing tradition of honoring the dynasty’s founder as a symbol of royal legitimacy and divine authority.

The reverse depicts an eagle standing left on a thunderbolt, a powerful emblem associated with Zeus and royal power, surrounded by Greek legend identifying the issuing authority. The eagle motif is among the most iconic and enduring designs of Ptolemaic coinage.

Struck in high-quality silver at the Alexandria mint, this piece reflects the complex political and economic history of Hellenistic Egypt during a period of internal conflict and Roman influence. The coin retains clear central details with attractive ancient surfaces and honest circulation wear consistent with its age.

A compelling historical artifact from the final century of independent Egyptian rule before Roman annexation in 30 BC, ideal for collectors of Greek, Hellenistic, and ancient silver coinage.
