Description

Roman provincial tetradrachm struck at Alexandria during the reign of Nero, dated to regnal Year 11 (64/65 AD). The obverse features a strong radiate bust of Nero facing right, with clear imperial portraiture characteristic of Alexandrian issues. The Greek legend reads ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ (Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus).

The reverse depicts an eagle standing left, holding a palm branch—an enduring symbol of Roman authority in Egypt—accompanied by the regnal date LΙΑ (Year 11) and the title ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ (Imperator). Struck in billon, as was standard for Alexandrian tetradrachms, the coin displays attractive natural toning and expected surface texture consistent with ancient silver alloys.

Alexandrian tetradrachms are admired for their substantial size, bold designs, and distinctive Greek legends, reflecting the unique administrative and monetary system of Roman Egypt under Alexandria.
