AR Drachm, Antioch Mint

Diameter: 18 mm

Weight: 3.97 g

Reference: Seleucid Coins (SC) 691.6 – Rare

This silver drachm was struck during the reign of Seleukos II Kallinikos, ruler of the Seleucid Empire in the mid-3rd century BC, a period marked by dynastic struggles and the consolidation of Hellenistic power in Syria and Asia Minor.

The obverse depicts the helmeted head of Athena facing right, symbolizing wisdom, military strategy, and divine protection. Athena’s strong classical features and crested helmet reflect the enduring influence of Greek artistic traditions across the eastern Mediterranean.

The reverse presents Apollo standing left, resting one hand upon a bow set on the ground while examining an arrow. This elegant and contemplative pose emphasizes Apollo’s role as both archer and god of prophecy. A pellet within a circular control mark appears in the left field, identifying this specific emission from the Antioch mint.

Struck in high-quality silver, this coin combines refined Hellenistic iconography with historical significance. Its survival over more than two millennia makes it a tangible link to the cultural and political world that followed Alexander the Great’s empire.

A scarce and desirable type, well suited for collectors of Greek and Hellenistic coinage, and an excellent representative of Seleucid artistry and mythology.
